The worlds of old media and new media have met. Strangely enough, this time they met in Mobile Alabama.
This was the hilarious result after WPMI-TV “Local 15″ in Mobile, Alabama decided to emphasize they were hip to new technology. Hip, but not apparently not savvy to the likely ramifications when a large sign like that is placed for all to see. According to the Palmetto Scoop, this was seen on Wednesday afternoon by an eagle-eyed passerby.
As a result of this snafu, it appears Local 15′s general manager and news director have both been suspended without pay.
This is not the first and won’t be the last hack of large, highly visible signs. The same thing happened while I was at Carnegie Mellon in 2000. I managed to find a good summary of this event: The story of the School of Drama LED sign hack.
