Who would protest at the funerals of the Virginia Tech Victims?

After such a tragedy, you would think people would give the mourning families some space and time to heal.

Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church don’t seem to think so. They plan to protest the funerals of those killed in the shooting at Virginia Tech. A quote from their site:

WBC will preach at the funerals of the Virginia Tech students killed on campus during a shooting rampage April 16, 2007. You describe this as monumental horror, but you know nothing of horror — yet. Your bloody tyrant Bush says he is ‘horrified’ by it all. You know nothing of horror — yet. Your true horror is coming. “They shall also gird themselves with sackloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads” (Eze. 7:18).

A tragedy of this scale and they’re planning to disrupt the funerals of the victims? What a bunch of assholes.

Nonetheless this is free speech and even though its revolting, it should be allowed. Fortunately, the Patriot Guard is willing to come, if invited, to Virginia Tech to shield the families from these protesting pricks.

I hope the Patriot Guard shows up. What Fred Phelps and the WBC are doing is disgusting, but within the bounds of speech. The Patriot Guard will help counter said revolting speech with some speech of their own and hopefully give the families some space and peace.

Recess Appointment of Swift Boat funder as Ambassador of Belgium

Today, Bush exercised his Executive powers to bypass Congress and give a recess appointment to Sam Fox.

Just a month ago, Bush withdrew Fox’s nomination to the ambassadorship because he didn’t have enough votes to pass Senate confirmation. What’s changed since then? Congress is on Easter vacation.

Sam Fox donated heavily to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth that helped sink Kerry’s campaign in 2004. A heavy political contributor given an ambassadorship is essentially cronyism, but that’s also politics. At least that’s a fairly harmless position, compared to something like being the head of FEMA.

Bush isn’t the first do to a recess appointment, nor is he the most prolific (so far). The LA Times has an list of recent recess appointments. Reagan made 243 appointments over his two terms. Bill Clinton made 140 over his two terms. So far, Bush has only made 106 recess appointments, but his term isn’t over yet……

Update: The Washington Post says the recess appointment might actually be illegal!
