Support Internet Radio! Sign a petition!

The US Copyright Office is proposing to increase the royalties Internet broadcasters will have to pay to broadcast content. What this means is your favorite Internet radio station might not exist for much longer. Soma.fm, di.fm, and every other independent Internet broadcaster is threatened. Even NPR will be affected by this royalty increase.

MyDD has a great summary of the royalty issue and how Internet Radio will be affected. NPR also has a story discussing what might happen if the royalty rate hike sticks.

What can you do? Sign a petition and make your voice heard. Fight to save Internet radio, before its destroyed by the higher royalties.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals saves lawyers’ jobs from computers!

On Monday, the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled a web expert tool was helping users too much to be called a clerical tool anymore and was essentially practicing law without a license.

The soulless tool helped users expedite the creation of bankruptcy petitions. People who are filling out bankruptcy petitions apparently can scare up $219 to access the system for 60 days. The automaton went in and filled out the appropriate forms and allowed the user to print out the forms. But apparently that’s too much, and the court ruled it was unauthorized in the practice of law.

The software did, indeed, go far beyond providing clerical services. It determined where (particularly, in which schedule) to place information provided by the debtor, selected exemptions for the debtor and supplied relevant legal citations. Providing such personalized guidance has been held to constitute the practice of law.

For those with Westlaw access, here’s the cite: 2007 WL 582719 C.A.9 (Cal.),2007.

Thanks 9th Circuit Court of Appeals for ensuring future lawyers have a way to pay off their student loans. :)

iTunes 7.1 breaks AirTunes

Silence while writing a memo is bad.

Yesterday, Apple released iTunes 7.1. It contains some updates for Apple’s new iTV and gives you full screen CoverFlow, if that’s of any importance to anyone. The update also has fixes for some Vista compatibility issues, but its still not “supported” by Apple officially since Vista isn’t explicitly listed as supported.

One item that definitely has been broken by the new iTunes is AirTunes support in Windows.

If you installed Bonjour for Windows and have updated to iTunes 7.1, you’ll need to go and disable your Bonjour service under Control Panel. Otherwise, iTunes won’t be able to see any of your AirTunes speakers and you’ll have to write your memo in silence.

No one wants to write a memo in silence.

This thread in the Apple Support Forums discusses the issue and the eventual workaround to make iTunes 7.1 work with AirTunes when the Bonjour service is installed.

Hopefully Apple will release iTunes 7.1.1 soon to address this issue. Or maybe they’ll update Bonjour.

In the meantime, back to the memo in a room full of music.

The Departed is great, but….

Scorsese’s The Departed is a great movie. Definitely one of the better ones this year. Its been a while since this many good movies have been out :)

But the original was better: the Infernal Affairs Trilogy.

Nicely redone though, nonetheless.
