The reason the Internet exists

If it wasn’t for the Internet, a lot of funny videos would never have been seen by anyone.

Wtf was that smell?

If you know me, you’ll realize I’m not a morning person. I’d much rather stay up late doing work instead of waking up early to finish things off. Partying all night? Sure, been there, done that once or twice too.  I just hate waking up early.
In order to squeeze in a somewhat regular workout schedule, I’ve had to try and change this whole night owl behavior. I’ve been waking up early lately, early enough to be in the gym by 7:00am….7:15am at the latest. It avoids the horde of people who eventually show up later in the day to use the gym, and its honestly nice and cool in the mornings for a good quick run.

The bad thing is….well, its fucking early in the morning. I like sleeping in.  Who doesn’t?

On the run this morning, I noticed some sort of a funky smell on my trail. The further I went into the neighborhood, the stronger the smell was. It was a this rich rotten funk….basically pretty damn nasty. If holding my breath was an option, then I would have. Unfortunately that doesn’t go well with running, or so I’ve heard.

Note to self: Fridays are trash days. Find a new trail or embrace the smell of rotting trash.

Wireless is awesome

I bought an Apple Airport a few months ago in Austin so I could relay my music out to my stereo.  Its a pretty solid music relay device, and integrates nicely with iTunes.  It also doubles as a repeater station for my Linksys WRT54G, so I got stupidly nice coverage in my apartment.

Fast forward to today, where I have a two bedroom in Winston Salem.  It was the only spot I could get in the complex, and honestly it wasn’t that expensive.  Now I also have a Dell D420 from the law school that I do most of my work on.  With law school comes lots of printing.  I was looking for a wireless print server the other night until I noticed something…

The Airport Express has a USB jack.

This morning, while I was flashing my WRT54G to use DD-WRT.  The Sveasoft Alchemy firmware was starting to annoy me with its bugs (inability to re-register to Dyndns properly, DHCP server failures every month or so) so I wanted to swap it out to something new.

First impression is DD-WRT is awesome.  Its even got a VPN server I’ll have to start using at some point.

Anyways, now I’ve got my Airport Express linked to my newly flashed WRT54G.  My old Samsung laser printer is plugged into that Airport, and both of my Windows XP based PCs can pick up the printer.  All it took was a quick install of Bonjour for Windows in order to activate the printer discovery.  One wizard later I’m able to print from anywhere.

Apple rocks.

So this is what law school is eh?

On August 5th, I drove out of Austin, TX and started on my trip out towards Winston-Salem, NC.  The week between my resignation at Dell and my departure from Austin was full of good byes and good lucks.  I spent time with a bunch of friends most of the week, reflecting on my time in Texas.

There was a lot of packing going on as well.  I decided a few weeks prior to use ABF’s UPack Relocube service.  I wasn’t sure what I wanted to use until I started reading some posts at MovingScam.com.  I realized that my nearly empty apartment in Austin wouldn’t come even close to filling a fractional freight trailer, so the pod would work perfectly for me.  I also got to pack at my own pace, which is a great thing when you don’t really plan things out.  Not that I don’t plan things out or anything :)

I highly recommend reading up at MovingScam.com before you make any moving service choices.   You don’t want the possessions in your life disappearing into the ether.

The night before I left, Joe, Mark, Aundrea, and I went out to Sullivan’s to hear a live band before I left.  Not a bad time, and the place knows how to make a proper martini.  I should have brought my Nikon, but my Canon had to suffice.  I’ll miss the ability to merely walk to another bar, instead of having to hop into a car and driving somewhere.  I’ll definitely miss hanging out with the crew.
My pod arrived in Winston-Salem earlier than I did.  I was taking a leisurely route up in order to enjoy myself.  I spent an evening hanging out with my buddy Neiguel in Houston, TX.  He was kind enough to give me a couch to crash on for the evening.  I also got some advice on law school from him that I hope will keep me sane.

The next day I went out to New Orleans.  I was there for Mardi Gras during my senior year at Carnegie Mellon.  That was a decent time, what with all the drinking and random debauchery.  The best part of the city has to be the food though.  I also wanted to see how the city was doing now, nearly a year after the debacle after Hurricane Katrina.

On my way to the French Quarter, where I was staying, I got lost and ended up in Jefferson Parish.  That portion of the city is unfortunately still in a sad state.  FEMA trailers are on nearly every lot.  Homes are still ravaged.  Neighborhoods are a shadow of their former selves.  Its honestly a sad sight.

When I finally got my bearings and got to the French Quarter, I saw a totally different New Orleans.  Here, most things had been spared from the destruction of the hurricane and the eventual flooding of the city.  I was here during the off season though, so there wasn’t a lot of tourist traffic in the area.  The good thing is it made the cost of the trip pretty low :)

I stayed at the Dauphine Orleans hotel for the evening.  Talk about convenience.  Right next to the quarter and private parking.  I arrived in the late afternoon and immediately went to walking around in the area with my Nikon D50.  The resulting waste of storage space is now on my New Orleans Flickr set.  I had dinner at the Red Fish Grill that evening.  Its an amazing restaraunt and I highly recommend it to anyone in the area.
Next on my trip was Atlanta.  I wasn’t sure if I could make it out there in one day, but a day of high speed driving and relatively few traffic obstacles made for a quick drive.  Apparently there was some sort of conference in town that day, so it made for inflated hotel prices on the North end of town.  Nonetheless, I found a place to stay and had dinner at Badayori.  Sushi buffets are evil :)

Finally, I arrived at home and spent a night or two there.  Then I headed up to Winston-Salem and arranged for some cable modem service hookups.  That evening, chpstcks showed up.  He was on his way to San Jose from Pittsburgh and was passing through.  Its good to see a buddy from the old days in school.

The next morning, the three of us unpacked the Relocube.  Out of all the crap I threw into the pod, only one bowl was broken.  Not a bad deal honestly.

Orientation week has been going on here the last few days.  By orientation they mean you have some silly events plus Legal Writing classes.  Its been interesting so far.  I’ll see in a few weeks if this is all its cracked up to be.  The profs at Wake seem to be pretty good so far, but I’ll reserve final judgment until I see what my other profs are like.
Winston-Salem itself seems interesting enough so far.  Its smaller than Austin, but its likely I won’t notice while I write up all those papers and legal briefs for classes.

On a side note, its nice to have a laptop again.  I’m not sure how I’d survive in class without it.  Taking notes by hand is so 20th century.

Back to work, the reading and writing never ends.
