San Fran, where extreme waste is stopped naturally

In San Fran, there’s hills everywhere.  Steep ones sometimes too.

There are also people with money there.  People with money do things like rent stretch SUVs and cruise around town in them.

The founders of San Francisco must have thought about this.  Proof you ask?

Look how this stretch SUV gets stuck on a hill :)

This is why Net Neutrality is so important

Net neutrality isn’t something thats inherently evil. It may even be an amazingly good idea. But there are certain things that can be harbingers of whether the idea is good or not.

This would be one of them.

A provider in Canada has now decided to charge Vonage (the VOIP service Wall Street loves to hate) a higher fee to maintain service for its users. This could be a test case where the idea is proven, one way or another. Maybe the Senate should wait and see what the effects of this turn out to be. Thats IF this levy holds up against any possible consumer reaction against this apparently fairly public decision by Shaw.

Eulogy to a faithful piece of technology

This morning I woke up and turned on the monitor like I usually do. I wanted to check the weather for the morning before I went out to Town Lake to do my Sunday morning run.

I’ve had this Dell P1110 for almost 7 years now, and its been showing its age lately. Sometimes its focus will be a bit weird, or the color will be strange for a moment. But nothing that doesn’t pass in a fwe seconds.
As the monitor turns on, it makes these weird popping noises. Eventually the image comes up.

At this point, I’m a bit annoyed but just move on to check the weather. The whole time the focus wavers a tiny bit, but nothing really drastic.

After my morning run and grocery raid, I went home and checked some email. The screen was still acting up. I start some laundry and head over to Fry’s to check out the Viewsonic VX2025WM. A bunch of reviews online gave this panel nod.

I check it out and its definitely pretty sweet. I go home to ponder it some. As I turn on my monitor, I notice its horribly out of focus now. I can’t even read anything on the screen anymore.

30 minutes later, I was back again from Fry’s, this time with the monitor.

I have to admit, its pretty nice so far. Its not as tall as the 21″ monitor, but I like the widescreen space a lot.

Panel next to the trusty Sony

My older monitor, the Dell, is relegated to the side for now, until I can find a way to dispose of it.

My trusty Dell P1110

I’ll miss ya buddy, we had some good times.

Carnegie Mellon loves games

Its an engineering school, did you think it would be any other way?

Kotaku finds the CMU Astronomy Club’s booth during Carnival.
Its not the biggest booth.  Its not the flashiest booth.  But its got games on it, which is good enough for the Internet :)

Wow, can we say awkward??

Normally W has some fun with the press corp.  Apparently he’s a pretty decent guy if you meet him face to face.  Some bad jokes here and there to inspire uncomfortablness amongst your minions.

But this time, Bush ends up making fun of a reporter’s sunglasses, not knowing he does it for medical reasons.

This was called out by The Daily Show, and I had to find evidence online :)

What have you been doing lately?

I haven’t done a personal post in a bit so here’s a stab.

In just about two months, I’ll be leaving my current job and going back to school at Wake Forest Law. Three more years of school coming at me. Its a pretty drastic change from what I’m doing now, but I think its the right time. Time to make my move before its too late and I’m 30 or something :)

It’ll be interesting to be in NC again. Winston Salem is smaller than Austin, but then again I’m only going there for the school. Hopefully it won’t be horribly boring, but its likely I won’t notice from all the work. But it should be worth it.

As such, I’ve been out doing more things around town lately so I can say “yea, I did that while I was in Austin”. I also went out and got myself a Nikon D50 to play with.

The first thing I did was go to a Round Rockets Express game. Its a minor league team in town, but its also baseball. It was only fun because they served beer :-P

Running to first

Next I went with my buddy Roy to an area in the Green Belt near his house. Its a pretty scenic area and once again I dragged my newest toy.

Roots

That was fun to reconnect a bit with nature. Granted it took two days for my shoes to dry back out but it was good fun nonetheless.

Memorial Day rolled around the next weekend. My buddy Neguiel drove over from Houston and we played shitloads of Hitman: Blood Money. If you haven’t played this game before, and ever had the secret agent/assassin fantasy, you’re missing out :)

We also wandered down to San Antonio, mostly for the purposes of us both being able to say that we’ve done that while we lived in Texas. The Riverwalk was a bit underwhelming to me. Very scenic though, like this bridge.

Random bridge on riverwalk

We did manage to find an awesome little restaurant though, Casa Rio.  Absolutely delicious Mexican food.  I highly recommend it if you’re ever in this town.

Of course we also went to The Alamo, which is another attraction in San Antonio.  Since we were visiting on a Sunday, we had the privledge of hearing a bunch of evangelicals telling everyone within earshot that they were going to hell.  The Alamo was a bit smaller than I expected, but at least I can say I’ve seen it now.

The Alamo itself

Last weekend, I took a cue from Dave Attell’s Insomniac show and went to the Texas Rollergirls Rollerderby.  I swear the whole thing was funded by Lonestar Beer.  It at least gets you a bit drunk.  There’s another league in Austin, but they haven’t had a rollerderby in a while so this was the one I went to.  Not as wild as the one shown on Insomniac I’m afraid :(

Rollergirls

Finally, last night I went to an MMA fight in town.  If you’ve heard of UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) or Pride Fighting, you know what I’m talking about.  Its definintely an interesting sport I’ve started to take interest in lately.  Its definitely fun to watch live :)

Moving around

So basically, I’ve been a bit active lately.  I’m also starting to run downtown at Town Lake on Sunday mornings.  Its a pretty scenic run and goes around the river in downtown.  No pics for that one yet, mostly because I’ll be damned if I have anything on me while I run, especially a camera :)

So about two more months left here, I better do everything I wanted to do fast.

Where’s Colbert?

What has Stephen Colbert been up to these last two weeks? If you haven’t noticed, its been all reruns on The Colbert Report for the last two weeks. Where’s Stephen? Did he get abducted by the Secret Service? Was a free trip to the sunny beaches of Cuba the result of his White House roast from several weeks ago?

It seems that he’s ok. On June 3rd, Stephen gave a commencement speech to the lucky students at Knox College.

In contrast, the Class of 2002 at Carnegie Mellon had Tom Ridge for their speaker.

I wouldn’t have fallen asleep if it had been someone funny instead of a person who sounded like he was running for president.

Holy crap this is funny

Apparently I’m late to the party, but this video of an angry Chinese dude in Hong Kong is funny as hell.

He deserves a fist in the face after the first minute :)
