If you haven’t heard about the deal with a Dubai based company to handle port security, well, you need to get your head out from under a rock.Within the last few days, the chorus of opposing voices has risen. President Bush declared that he would veto any attempts to block the deal via legislation. Yesterday, he said he would accept a delay, and as it turns out, the company itself has now decided to delay the deal.
Various people in Congress have complained. One of them is Sue Myrick.
Sue Myrick used to be mayor of Charlotte. She eventually moved on to the US House of Representatives and apparently has held onto her seat for a while.
She sent a letter to President bush on the 22nd of February. She’s released the letter for public consumption here. A choice quote would be “HELL NO”. Read the letter and see for yourself
By the way, she’s a Republican.
On this issue, I have to ask how is this any different from the status quo? The company itself is not the last word for port security. That’s the responsibility of Homeland Security, since it now controls the US Customs service along with the Coast Guard. Granted, the security may be incredibly lax, and given the volume of shipments, only a small portion will ever get inspected. A short review period, as proposed by Hillary Clinton under a pre-existing 1992 law. should be enough to determine whether or not national security will be affected by this deal.
