Wow, rational thought once again wins. In North Carolina, there was a case where Diebold (makers of those ATM machines we all know and love, along with the electronic/paperless voting machines we might not like so much…) tried to avoid North Carolina’s electronic voting regulations.
One being that you HAVE to put your code in escrow, AND give the names of the programmers.
Its not a full audit trail, but at least its something.
Guess who won?
Now it looks like Diebold isn’t going to sell their voting machines in North Carolina.
Sure, a company is entitled to some things. Like not giving out proprietary code. But when it comes to the public good, and in cases where their code is being used to DECIDE what the public wants, I want accountability and transparency.
