Silent raves the future?

Might be in England….
The Glastonbury music festival is thinking about handing out headphones so that it won’t violate noise ordinances.

Definitely takes away from one of the neat things about raves (thumping music). Leaves another neat thing about raves (dancing like a jackass). Sounds pretty neat honestly =) I’d hope the headphones are at least as good as the speakers you usually have at those events, which isn’t really all that good. Hopefully you would have some control over volume too, hearing damage is one of the things you have to risk when going to a rave.

Damn it, why does Austin have a crap rave scene.

To all you people getting paid

All you employed people:

Bonuses just arrived at work, at least where I work. Whether you’re working at a large company, or with a small firm or self-employed, whether you’re Republican, Democrat, Green, or hell, even Communist, whatever you are, take a moment to think about your life, about where you are, and how events have shaped your life.

Still with me? Not bored sick? Good, now take another moment and think about what charities you might be willing to help:

The ACLU? (only the ACLU Foundation itself is an entity that can accept tax-deductable contributions, not to be confused with the "card carrying" ACLU, read this to learn the distinction) Both are good institutions, although definitely not nearly as helpful as the other institutions listed here.

Doctors without Borders? (Nobel Prize winners 1999, and a charity who actually uses the money you send it to help people)

Carnegie Mellon University. Yes, they took my money. Yes, it was expensive. Yes it was a shitload of work. Was it worth it? Yes. Now shut up and pay up, unless you had absolutely NO loans/grants helping with your tuition. Tax deductable too.

Don’t like these? Hit up Charity Navigator and find a reputable one to give to. Honestly, is another $50 really going to make that much of a difference in your life? Depending which charity you give to, someone else could greatly benefit from it. At very least, consider the option.

No animals were harmed in this hopefully guilt trip inducing post. Especially the platypus. Its had a rough time anyways. I mean come on, they ripped it in the movie Dogma:

"Even God has a sense of humor… just look at the platypus."

Why PBS should always get funding

Every now and again PBS surprises me with some neat stuff, like this:

Watch Frontline Online

That’s cool as hell. I can’t say I watch much PBS….with the not being able to get it clearly over the air, and the utter lack of amusing content on the channel. However, I’ve heard good things about Frontline on occasion, and have watched some of the documentaries as well. They weren’t too bad and, like its less visually appealing cousin NPR, seemed to be relatively balanced and well researched.

Upon reflection, this is really sad. I’m saying PBS has good stuff. Hell, I’m saying NPR has good stuff. I’m either old or a liberal. Maybe both, haha.

The Bankruptcy Bill, currently moving through the Senate

Here’s a great summary of the Bankruptcy Bill currently moving through Congress. If you’re more of an NPR type of person, here’s a link to their story about the bill.

All the more reason to try and remain fiscallly solvent for my entire life.
