Heading to the land of liberals

Heading to Vancouver Canada early in the morning tomorrow. I’ll be up there until Jan 1st. Spending some time with the family and snowboarding some as well. And oh yeah, the food, hehehe. Got the iPod charged up and with enough music to hopefully keep me sane in the airports. This will be the first time I’ve taken a longer trip on one of the discount airlines. Hopefully America West doesn’t suck =P

It’ll be strange unplugging for about two weeks. This year especially I seem to have gotten more information hungry. I have notifiers that tell me whenever any of the news blogs I track post anything. Sometimes they can beat the mainstream news sources (CNN, NY Times, NBC) to a story. Most of the time, they get the story around the same time, but will often times do independent research/analysis on the issue. It definitely doesn’t replace the main news organizations, who have the market and funding to support foreign correspondents, deeper connections with companies and politicians, and so on and so forth. Blogs did at least give a refreshing new angle on the news. In addition, its an active feedback system, where the readers can make comments, give insights, right there on the site. Its just neat. It’ll be weird to not have that for two weeks. Or maybe shorter if there’s open wireless nearby and I have my laptop =)

Took the LSAT two weeks ago. I’ll know in a few weeks how I did. Starting the application process, still need to work out which schools I’ll try for. The deadlines are a bit off, so it should be relatively pain free.

Did some work this week with some C# code running in Linux thanks to the Mono Project. The website framework was actually able to compile relatively painlessly, after a few tweaks. Seems Mono has some issues with multiple nested inheritances, or at least deviates from Microsoft’s implementation of the CLR.

I’ve setup Azureus to scape a few RSS feeds for tv shows. Hopefully it won’t miss a beat and I’ll get everything =) Fortunately, the Daily Show is off until the New Year, so I won’t be missing any.

I will be missing at least one new Arrested Development, but I’ll hopefully have it waiting for me when I return.

A bunch of eDonkey and BitTorrent sites got raided this week. Those guys are going to have one hell of a legal fight ahead of them. The conglomerates (the MPAA/RIAA) have enough money and lawyers to punish these people unfortunately.

Gotta go finish packing. Have an early flight tomorrow. Happy holidays and happy New Year. See you in 2005.

Too good

Tom Ridge must be so proud

In all honesty, he did pull together a wholly new arm of the government from various other agencies, and did manage to mush them together into a relatively coherent group. Granted, the TSA is still crap, and the major shipping ports are pretty much wide open, but he was limited by Congress since he didn’t have the complete authority that he wanted. He also was only on the job for two years, which is a short time for this size of a job.

Wtf, a real post?

Meh, sure, why not.

Been a while since I posted a real post. I blame the Republicans…..somehow… =P

Nah, honestly, been busy studying for the LSAT (taking it again on Saturday) along with stuff at work. Fortunately, work has now died down (moritorium is fun like that) and after Saturday, I’m free of the LSAT again until I receive my hopefully better score. I can get into Tier 1 schools with my score, but I want to be able to have a shot at the upper half of the bracket. I’ll know around Xmas time if that pans out though…..

Got about 2.5 weeks before I head up to Canada again for some snowboarding, food, and seeing the family. I better wipe the dust off my gear, hahaha. Cypress Mountain is already reporting good snowfall, and Whistler is getting some too. Whistler’s shuttle bus is super expensive though, so maybe it’ll be better to save some money and hit Cypress the entire time. There are enough trails there to keep Kevin and I busy for a while :-)

Congrats to Michi on scoring a job in Rochester. Enjoy the snow :-P

Spent Thanksgiving with some friends who were staying in town as well. Figured it was that or I’d have a turkey sandwich. Had some turkey, had some booze, hahaha. Power hours never work out for me very well…..

Its finally starting to get wintery in Texas now….first freeze is tonight. I hate the fact that all the seasons here are either warm or hot…with a few decently cold days thrown in. Changes in seasons are a good thing. Of course, being able to go running outside most of the year is also a good thing I guess. Wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t so fucking hot here in the summer.

For the week or so before Thanksgiving, it was raining non-stop in central Texas. Sucks for people living on the first floor. You probably saw the pictures on the news with people in boats rowing towards their houses, or policemen/firemen saving smartasses who thought they could drive through what essentially are fast moving streams. Texas is definitely made to handle heat, not large amounts of water from the sky.

Got my computer nice and stable again. My old motherboard had some blown capacitors it turns out. Swapped power supplies and memory, tore apart the whole system practically, before I noticed some funky rust looking gunk on the motherboard. I’m not ECE, but I figure that’s not by design. New Nvidia based board saved the day just in time for Half Life 2. Game is super fun, runs great on the video card I bought a year ago in anticipation (game was due a year ago…) and is a good time. The ending is a letdown though, but the game overall is quite nice. Graphically not necessarily as nice as Doom 3 in some regards, but it has a story outside of “dark halls, shoot the thing throwing shit at you”.

Two new TV shows have caught my eye lately. First one is Drawn Together on Comedy Central. Its a reality show with cartoon characters, all of whom are spoofs of other cartoon characters. The first few episodes were “meh” but now they’re getting hilarious. The pikachu-like creature is hilarious….his utter contempt for his housemates is the best :-) The other one is the Rebel Billionare, aka stupid human tricks in front of a really rich guy. Its not as funny as the original Survivor, where you could watch people starve on prime time TV, but its pretty good nonetheless. Its always entertaining to watch people try and walk between two hot air balloons.

After the LSATs, I’ll probably check out Samurai Champloo. Several people have told me its excellent now, so I’ll probably end up watching some of it. Unlike Naruto, I won’t be like 80 episodes behind, so I might actually finish watching it at some point :-P
