Its safe to come out now

“The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved.”
-John Ashcroft (resignation letter, November 9, 2004)

I’m so glad he thinks the job is done.

If you don’t have access to the NYTimes website, check out this neat website called bugmenot.com. Or you could register with them, its not like they charge $$….

Its been nearly a week

And I still can’t believe that we’re stuck another 4 years with W. I’ve stared at the electon results, grouped by county (look a few days back if you missed the link) and I still can’t understand how that many people think Bush is a better choice than Kerry. Not like I had a voice….I’m in Texas and contrary to what some of the Democrats here might think, the state is NOT swinging to the Democratic side in the near future, not without fundamental changes in both sides of the asiles of Congress.

I’m gonna rant, watch out.

Ok, so Kerry didn’t really have a clear plan for Iraq. Granted. Now, tell me what Bush’s was….

Terrorism. Ok, so Bush likes the big stick idea. Kerry likes the global consensus concept. One pisses off folks, one at least attempts to not piss them off so much. Making less people pissed off is a good idea.

Healthcare. Kerry wanted to give it to everyone and have a group buying system. True, it would be expensive as hell, but at least that would provide long term benefits for the country in general. Bush? Well, he likes a market based system and wants to make sure we pay more for the exact same drug you can buy in Canada for at least half the cost, if not significantly less. Thats grand. Its for “safety concerns” he says. Same packaging, in some cases, even coming from the same damn warehouse. Good one. Granted, Canada is blocking mass sales to the US in order to protect their own broken, but slightly less so, healthcare system.

Education. Thanks Bush for reducing the size of the Pell grants. Oh wait, you didn’t do anything about the cost of education, so fuck that, thanks for nothing. The no child left behind policy is working just great in Texas, thanks for asking. Thats why there’s so much talk about changing it (at least it seems to be on the radio, I couldn’t care much less for education in this state right now). Kerry, well, yea, not much help there either.

Social security. Its fucked. Thanks. At least Kerry was around and helping to fix it last time we ran into this. Privatizing is a bad idea W….Greenspan says so, most economists say so. Letting younger people taking $$ out is real helpful too…..how exactly are the older people who are of the proper age supposed to get their checks when the workers supporting the system are taking out some of the money early?

Gay marriage. Bush, anti. Kerry, not particularly against civil unions. Whatever. I say let them get married. What’s the big deal? Moral values? Oh really? You know, once upon a time, if you didn’t go to church on Sunday if you were a Christian, you’d go to hell. You’d also go to hell if you worked on Sunday. Catholic? Well birth control is sending you to hell. Moral values my ass.

Whatever, I’m biased. That’s delightful. Speak your mind if you have something valid to say. Thats what comments are for.

Ended up getting a 20gig iPod at Best Buy last weekend. Its a fun little toy, pretty small (although not as small as my MD is) and has an awesome UI compared to all the other players out there on the market now. The lack of gapless playback (no gaps between tracks) is somewhat annoying, but most of my stuff that I want to be gapless I have in solid MP3s anyway, so its not a big deal. Sounds ok when plugged into the main stereo, although it does seem to clip the lows a bit. It mght be the MP3s too, so I’ll have to try with that Apple Lossless codec at some point and see if its really there.

Its finally starting to cool down here. Fall/winter don’t really change anything here except make people change from shorts to pants. Kinda weak if you ask me.

FirefoxMozilla Firefox 1.0 should be out tomorrow, it’ll be a good day. Traffic at Dell.com indicates nearly 17% of our customers are using the browser, in various iterations. With 1.0, and the NYTimes ads they’re buying, it should shoot up a fair bit higher. That’s good, my dynamic pricing and compare code likes a mostly DOM compliant browser =)

Between computer crashes, finally beat Rome: Total War on medium. Its a sweet game. Now to see how hard hard really is….

It was a pretty ugly result…

http://www.electoral-vote.com has the results from the election broken down county by county.

Looks like most major urban centers, along with a fair number of major ports (which tend to coincide with major cities) went with Kerry.

Its just that ocean of red in between the islands of blue had more people, and more electoral votes.

This isn’t too surprising in hindsight since the Democratic party typically has had more influence in urban areas.

There’ll need to be a few more little blue islands if there’s to be any hope of regaining either of the houses of Congress, let alone the White House….
