April 2004

I”m so lazy

It seems its jumping into a two week rotation now for the blog updates. Thats pretty pathetic, I’ll have to do better.Nothing too interesting happened in the last two weeks honestly. Previous week, week of April 1st was an ok one, nothing really of note. The following week some issues at work clocked me in at over 60 hours. Just hours and hours of fun. The worst part was all that extra (unpaid) overtime could have been avoided if there had been some simple duty unit testing going on. Granted, its definitely the responsibility of the developer to come up with testing scenarios as well, but when an \”eager beaver\” comes up and starts spouting buzzwords, folks think he’s got a clue and give him the task. When he drops the ball, and other folks’ asses (like mine) end up on the line, enough is enough. Its no wonder off-shore employees are so attractive to hiring managers. Why hire incompetence at US prices when you can hire 10 folks, most of which will be incompetent. Chances are, you’ll get the ones with a clue for cheaper, and the company wins.Yes, I’m on the side that says \”fuck it, outsource away\”. Free market economics, once freed of transaction costs, do not care about borders. Efficiencies bring business. Bitching about off-shore outsourcing is retarded. Its these same market forces that give people their $50 DVD players, their $149 XBox’s, and various other gizmos. Not to mention those shiny new SUVs everyone drives all over the highway on (yes, components made in Mexico). Now, with that out of my system, last week was pretty easy in comparison. Had some training for some theoretical stuff that supposedly all programmers should know. The famed UML was introduced to me, and all I can say is that its just thinking with your head out of your ass. Not too bad, but its nice that there’s a formal way of doing that ;)Helped a friend move into a new apartment today. 32\” Sony WEGA tvs are a bitch to carry up to a third floor apartment.Got a suggestion that I should be a \”greeter\” for Burning Man this year. Still pondering about that one…..although it could be fun I guess =P

April Fool’s is retarded

April Fool’s pranks are by and large weak. Most people do some stupid shit, or something so cliche that its just boring. Thats just a waste of a good chance to fuck with people. Or, you could be like Google and pull something wacky (http://www.google.com/jobs/lunar_job.html)Been pretty busy at work lately. Finishing up things for a service pack going out tomorrow (or today I guess). It’ll be another late night at work, but hopefully things will settle down for a few weeks afterwards. Another Friday night ruined in the name of work. Hopefully Saturday will make up for the lost time.Last weekend was a pretty decent partying weekend. The NCAA tournament kept things interesting. I ended up cheering for the out of state teams at local bars, which made me real popular ;-) Eh, who cares, its just a game. Hopefully Georgia Tech will whoop OSU’s ass, and Duke will somehow get past UConn, so there’ll be a nice friendly rematch so we can get revenge for that upset during the regular season. Those punks. On the note of random partying, I’ve come to the conclusion that there is a law of nature. This law suggests that the main entertainment is always upstaged by the supporting cast. I’ll leave it at that, kids might be reading this =)Been playing more UT2004 as usual. Tempted to go and get the retail version, but I can’t find a DVD copy of it. I’m not about to buy a 6 cd version of a game when a perfectly good DVD version exists. Game companies need to start shipping more DVD copies of their games. Doing the cd swap is weak. Screw that, most computers nowadays have a DVD drive. Get with the program.Allergies have been raising hell with me lately. Even weather.com keeps telling me that the pollen count in my area is \”very high\”. No shit sherlock. I can go outside and look at my black (now slightly yellow) car covered with pollen and tell you that. Good thing Zyrtec exists. I’d be a sneezing, itchy eyed mess otherwise. Claratin is OTC now, but Zyrtec is actually cheaper since I have the medical plan and all that. Cheaper and more potent is better.Speaking of random drugs, there’s this new super potent Viagra alternative out there now. Forgot what its called, starts with a \”C\”. I saw an ad for it during the NCAA tournament. The funny part of all this is that one of the caveats mentioned during the ad is that \”If erection lasts more than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention\”. Thats just fucked up. I wonder if it means you’re about to have a stroke or something, hahaha.
